Take a moment….enjoy cycling in the Scottish Highlands a half century ago…..

My bike in the Scottish Highlands (author photo)

“First, along the winding shore of Loch Lomond, trees bending across the road, the fear of a flat tire seasoning the ride. Then upwards by the splashy boulders to the town of Tarbet, right turn and on the road to Chrianlarich.

The Loch thins out and now I’m posting a letter, then down the road and over to Tyndrum. But something fantastic is happening. The meadows are falling away and filled in with large grassy hills looming away for hundreds of feet.

“Then through Tyndrum, after lunch and batteries bought. I’m ascending now, and it’s no problem, high gear all the way through the beautiful Glen Orchy, up, climbing and now breathlessly, I’m suddenly in a land of tall rugged peaks.

Descending a bit, then on an ascent, I spot a large deer or moose sprinting down the bare mountainside towards the road. The country is barren, absolutely…..with the occasional car and concrete the only things telling me I’m not alone on this mountain.
